A Senior Lecturer (Assistant professor) in Cardiovascular Physiology and Metabolism and a British Heart Foundation Accelerator Award Fellow at the William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI), Barts and London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Joined Queen Mary in November 2017 in the first faculty post after 9 years cardiovascular research postdoctoral training at the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Research Excellence Centres: Oxford and King’s College London (KCL). At Oxford in Prof Stefan Neubauer’s group, responsible for all the physiological metabolism aspects of the £1.5 million BHF research programme investigating the pharmacology of augmenting cellular ATP reserve in heart failure. At KCL in Prof Shattock’s group, she used her extensive physiological metabolism experience to interface in situ NMR spectroscopy with physiological techniques to study modulation of sodium regulation. This work resulted in a major scientific advancement recently published in Nature Communications garnering international press coverage (BBC World Service) as well as press releases by KCL and WHRI. Furthermore, during her time at King’s she collaborated with Professor Mike Murphy’s group at Cambridge on a breakthrough study to show that succinate accumulation is a universal metabolic signature of ischaemia/reperfusion injury. Since this paper was published in Nature it has been cited over 1200 times.
