Biografija

Damijan Miklavčič received university diploma degree in electrical engineering in 1987; Master of Science in 1991, and PhD in 1993; all from University of Ljubljana. He was employed by the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Electrical Engineering first as a researcher and later as teacher. He was visiting researcher at CNRS, France at Institute Gustave Roussy, Villejuif in France in 1995-96. From 2002 he has been elected full professor at the University of Ljubljana and is a tenured professor at University of Ljubljana. He is currently giving courses at PhD level Electroporation Based Technologies and Treatments an elective course at Biomedicine study – general medicine; organized as a Scientific Workshop Since 2003 (www.ebtt.org), at Master level: Biological Systems; Neurocybernetics; Research and Development Communication; and at Bachelor level: Project Management, Teamwork and Intellectual Property. Until now he served as mentor to 31 PhD students; 19 Master Students, and 51 students for their undergraduate theses.

On institutional level Damijan Miklavčič served as the Head of the Laboratory of Biocybernetics (1998-2019); Vice-Dean for Research at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (2003-2005); Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (2007-2015).  On the national level he served as the     Member of the Scientific Council to the Slovenian Research Agency (2007-2009); Member of the Council of Science and Technology of the Republic of Slovenia (2010-2013); and Member of Slovenian National Awards Committee for Science (2018-2022); he also served as the President of the Slovenian Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology (2007-2022). Internationally he is a member of numerous professional societies. He was Member of the Council of the Bioelectrochemical Society (2009–2017); he created a world-wide network through proposing and chairing COST TD1104 action on electroporation (2012-2016) which after the end of the project was incorporated in the International Society for Electroporation-Based Technologies and Treatments (http://www.electroporation.net) and was the first elected President of the International Society for Electroporation-Based Technologies and Treatments (2016-2017).

His current research interests include electroporation based treatments and therapies, including cancer treatment by means of electrochemotherapy, gene electrotransfer, and tissue ablation by irreversible electroporation. Prof. Miklavcic has authored or co-authored over 480 original articles in scientific journals, over 700 conference contributions (of which 76 were invited lectures), 30 scientific book chapters and 5 university textbooks. He has edited over 70 books and proceedings. His works have been cited 21.787 (WoS), 25.592 (Scopus), 37.267 (Google Scholar). His h-index is 81 (according to WoS), 86 (Scopus), 103 (Google Scholar). He serves as a reviewer in more than 70 different IF Journals (including New England Journal of Medicine, Chemical Reviews, Nature Communications, EBiomedicine, IEEE Medical Imaging,…). He served as Guest/Special Issue Editor to journals: Current Gene Therapy; Bioelectrochemistry; Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies; Journal of Membrane Biology; Biomedical Engineering Online; Medical&Biological Engineering&Computing; Radiology&Oncology; Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology.

Selected awards and honors: Award of the Republic of Slovenia for Scientific and Research Achievements (1995); Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia in Science (2003); Knight of the Order of Academic Palms of the French Republic (2008); IFMBE Vladimir Zworykin Award (2012); Rector's Award for Innovations of the University of Ljubljana – 1st Prize (2012 and 2021); Golden Plaque of the University of Ljubljana (2014); is Fellow of the European Alliance for Medical and Biomedical Engineering & Science since 2015; and received  Honorary Doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (2019).
